The Brookings Blizzard will be hosting the first ‘Icing Out Cancer’ event on January 31st, 2015 when they host the Minot Minotauros at Larson Ice Center. The event is sponsored by Shane Andersen of Century 21 and will benefit the Brookings County Relay for Life.
During the game the Brookings Blizzard will be wearing specially designed purple jerseys that will be auctioned off during a live auction after the game. All of the proceeds from the jersey auction will be donated to the Brookings County Relay for Life.
The idea for the event came from Lori Ponto and Shane Andersen, long time Relay for Life volunteers.
“I am always looking for ways to give back to the community and was talking to another committee member, Lori Ponto, about the Blizzard and supporting an event like this. I asked her if I could be a part of it and the rest is history,” said Shane Andersen when asked about how he got involved.
Philanthropy is an important aspect of the Blizzard’s mission, and finding new ways to give back benefits the Brookings community as a whole. Each year teams across the North American Hockey League help raise thousands of dollars and for local and national charities. Teams also give back with thousands of hours of community service.
The Brookings Blizzard have worked with countless organizations in the Brookings community including Habitat for Humanity, Project Joy, GAP After School Program, Camelot Fall Festival, South Dakota Children’s Museum, United Living Community, Brookings Ice Skating Association, Brookings Swim Club, Special Olympics, and now Brookings County Relay for Life.
In hopes of raising monetary donations for the Brookings County Relay for Life, Shane also aims to bring awareness to the disease and the cause.
“Several members of my family have been affected by cancer,” said Andersen. “I have never met anyone who has not been affected by cancer in some form or another.”
For the next few weeks leading up to the event, the Blizzard and other Relay for Life volunteers will be selling t-shirts and wrist bands to raise money and awareness for the game. Fans are encouraged to wear purple to the game to match the team’s uniforms. The Blizzard are also working with the rink staff to color the ice purple for the event.
