The Brookings Blizzard were victorious Saturday evening at the Larson Ice Center beating the Minot Minotauros 3-1. The Blizzard got off to a slow start and found themselves trailing 1-0 at the end of the first period. Beau Ricketts score on the power play for the Minotauros at the 13:56 mark after the Blizzard’s Cody Marooney was sent to the penalty box for roughing. In the second period Eric Brenk scored off an assist from Marooney and Derek Sand and the teams went to the locker rooms tied at one. One minute and 13 seconds into the third period, Vsevold Kramerev scored his first goal of the year and the Blizzard took a 2-1 lead. Kramerev, who arrived in Brookings just last week from Russia, was playing in his first game of the season. After scoring what would eventually be the game winner, Kramerev was awarded the number one star for his efforts. Team captain, Thomas Williams, added a short-handed goal at the 14:03 mark to secure the victory. Williams’s point total now sits at 15. He has recorded at least one point in every game this season and leads the team, and the division, in points. Nick Deery recorded the victory in goal stopping 24 of 25 shots.
Coming into the weekend the Blizzard were tied with the Austin Bruins for first place in the division. A rare one-game weekend for the Blizzard meant the Bruins had a chance to claim sole possession of first place if they could walk away with two victories. They were only able to secure one win, but with a shootout lose to the Bismarck Bobcats on Friday night, the Bruins earned an extra point to give them a one-point advantage in the standing.
The Blizzard will host the Coulee Region Chill this Friday night at the Larson Ice Center at 7:00pm. The team will then travel to Coulee Region on Saturday to play the Chill for the fifth time this season.
